So I have been sort of slammed in RL and never did do a Yuletide reveal or any kind of Chocolate box posts. So I'm just going to cram them all here :)


Yuletide reveal: I matched on Norma, and if there's any opera that needs canon-divergence fix-it it's that one, because there's that scene where it seems super obvious from the libretto and music that the next thing that was supposed to happen was that Norma and Adalgisa were going to run off together, but somehow instead Pollione shows up again?? I blame the censors! (Well, okay, not really, but still.) Thank you to sprocket and zdenka for beta, to zdenka for talking to me about what the opera libretto actually said, and to sigaloenta for talking to me about history and ancient Romans and Gaul, all of which I pretty much ignored in favor of over-the-top Opera History, oops.

But also recip's letter talked about Kevin Price's crisis of faith in Book of Mormon, which was so relevant to my interests that I ended up watching BoM and then I ended up writing 6k words about Kevin Price and faith struggles and Connor McKinley's struggles with being gay and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

I am a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but I have gone through very similar issues to the ones Kevin Price goes through in the fic, both in regards to the Church and in regards to God. I stayed in, and in the fic Kevin doesn't, as requested by recip -- I pretty much shoehorned in another elder from the musical, Elder Neeley, to be the authorial stand-in, not sorry, especially since he turned out to be useful in other peripheral character-related ways. But a good friend of mine from church has been going through the same thing in the last couple of years, and she left, after a lot of pain and a lot of angst, and it has clearly been the right decision for her, as staying in (though my faith is very far from orthodox at this point) was the right decision for me. In a lot of ways this story is for her, too; I wanted to validate the experience she was going through, to write about what it felt like and how painful it is, and how it's not a decision people make on a whim, it's an important and wrenching one. ....Anyway, this fic has a lot of my heart in it, which doesn't necessarily mean it's any good, of course.

Chocolate box writing: I put in a whole lot of kind of out-there pairings I thought it would be fun to write, so I wasn't exactly surprised when the assignment was George Washington/George III, and recip's letter postulated an AU where England won the war and I could not stop thinking about it! So I wrote a humorous (at least, I hope it's funny) but also non-con mature-rating revenge scenario which is all kinds of wrong and I went around telling everyone I was totally going to orphan it or sock it up, because I don't really write that kind of thing, and then I forgot to before reveals so there it is. :P Thank you to sprocket for beta! and for not running away

Well, RL got busy, as it does, and as it turned out I didn't finish it until literally hours before reveals (if CB had revealed on time I would probably just not have written it at all) so I didn't end up signing up for the pinch hit, but at least cookiegirl got an extra treat!

Oh, and because no one had ever written Norma fic before I wrote one so it could be wrangled. So, when I wrote the Yuletide assignment two of my three betas/alphas thought that Norma and Adalgisa would be heading the effort to defeat the Romans. I eventually decided that I didn't want to go that direction for recip's fic, but I was tempted, and I wanted to write it, so, um, have a little snippet of a Norma-universe with magic, which does not end well for Pollione. I was kind of in a hurry and didn't get this looked over, so my apologies that anything Roman or Gaulish is probably... super inaccurate. (Though please tell me and I'll fix it!)

Just so you know, I will never be tired of you writing stuff for me ♥ And I loved your Rodrigo/Carlo so much; this and baby Hampson/Alagna might have something to do with the present state of my current Don Carlo feels ;)

Also, your George III/George Washington fic made me wince as well as snicker, and it was glorious -- I am very glad you did not orphan or sock, for I would never have read it otherwise!

<3 The funny thing is, I wrote that fic and then watched baby Hampson/Alagna, and thought, wow, I should have done that in the other order! Although quite possibly it would not have changed the final product very much :D
