This is the letter which he did not send.

Um. It looks like I forgot to actually mention one of the fics that's getting remixed here :D His noble words revealed to my soul a new world is of course the main one, but I also wrote these stories as a pinch hit for [personal profile] iberiandoctor for Rare Male Slash Exchange, and the first one is also getting remixed:

Dear ToT writer

Dear ToT writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I am very excited to get anything from any of these fandoms :D Feel free to use your own ideas or prompts — I love seeing how other people think about my favorite fandoms, and I love seeing interpretations that are different from mine (some of my favorite fics are the ones that made me look at things in a new way). Also, please don't read anything into the amount of stuff I have written for each fandom; I would be extremely pleased to receive anything for any of these, otherwise I would not have requested them.

Also, I would be totally happy to see any of these people interact with zombie pumpkins! (Or any sort of horror/supernatural-ish kind of thing, but zombie pumpkins seem both horror-occult-ish and kinda cute, which is a combination I am super here for. Pet bats? Friendly ghosts?) Olivier and her team defend Briggs from an invasion of alchemy-animated zombie pumpkins! Cave Johnson has the Aperture scientists make ill-advised robot zombie pumpkins that just want to be your friend! Rodrigo takes up his sword (...but not the executioner's axe! :D ) and defends Filippo and Carlo from zombie pumpkins! and then Philip and Carlos get into a fight as to which of them Rodrigo likes more The strength of Don Alvaro's grief for the di Vargases scares off the zombie pumpkin invasion! Tatyana's cute zombie pumpkin pal helps her get over Onegin and fall properly in love with Gremin! Or something :)

His noble words revealed to my soul a new world (Don Carlo)

This is what happens when you leave me unattended, I'm just saying. Canon-divergence fix-it fic is what happens!

What I needed more than anything else after watching Don Carlo was to have fixed — not Rodrigo's sacrificial death — I desperately wanted to have fixed the part where his sacrifice doesn't end up saving anyone at all. (There's not even really any hope for either Carlos or Flanders. That's all I really ask.) Also I have a lot of Feelings about Philip and Rodrigo, and how in the opera there is a strong consciousness of the lord-liege relationship between them on both sides that — if it could have been leaned on just a bit more — Well. Anyway.

Concrit and discussion are always welcome — on all my fics, really (it's interesting to see what did and didn't work for people, and different interpretations, as well as nice things, which of course I always enjoy), but this one particularly because unless I get hit by a bus there are going to be more fics in this fandom coming :P

La Traviata fic

So, yeah, 1. I have SO MANY FEELINGS about Giorgio Germont, and 2. It kind of irks me that the daughter, who is kind of important plot-wise, also not only doesn't ever show up but doesn't even get a name. I mean! I understand why it would have been one person too many musically speaking, but still...

Also this fic doesn't really solve anything about the opera, not really. I just had all these FEELINGS, okay? And not enough fic to speak of in the archive when I went there to go have feeeeeelings! So here we are.

Chocolate box reveal

Someday I will post about a fic that isn't canon-divergence fix-it fic, but today is not that day.

I didn't actually sign up for Chocolate Box, but [personal profile] categranger had this really awesome letter and I am already sort of obsessed with Eugene Onegin, and, well, I ended up writing a Eugene Onegin treat. And then I ended up writing a sequel to the treat. The original treat is basically pure opera (I even kind of imagine them singing it), but the sequel, which is a series of letters between Onegin and Tatyana, is much more Pushkin-based because it required a lot more worldbuilding which was already present in Pushkin (though I always also tried to stay true to the opera, and in particular the character of Olga is more opera-flavored than Pushkin-flavored).

The second fic is probably readable without reading the first, only knowing that it is in fact a canon-divergent AU, with the details of the divergence gradually revealed as the fic goes on.

The point of divergence is — well, okay, this owes a debt to Pushkin too. In Pushkin, he says Tatyana doesn't know about the duel, and even goes so far as to ask whether she might have stopped it had she known. And [personal profile] categranger also pointed up the duel as, gosh, if only it could be fixed — and, well, so.

Snowflake challenge, days 5-7

Day 5-7 for [community profile] snowflake_challenge:

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

This would have to be The Isolate Tower: An Earthsea Compendium, which has saved me from making too many mistakes to count these past two Yuletides, and in general is just really interesting and neat if you want to know anything or look up any detail about Earthsea.

Day 6

Leave feedback for a fanwork. Or multiple fanworks. It can be as simple as I liked this to a detailed list of all the things you loved about the fanwork. The key is to leave some sort of feedback.

Done (for the two fics I recced in Day 3 that I hadn't actually left feedback on yet)

Day 7:

In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.

Uh. I wasn't going to do this one. But then I realized it was neat to have the opportunity to tell people what I like about them, so, uh, here, only if you would like that opportunity, here you are. Or, just say hi! Or talk to me about fandom! Or… whatever you like, really.

Snowflake challenge, days 1, 3

*dusts off this journal*

[personal profile] frayadjacent has convinced me to give [community profile] snowflake_challenge a chance! We'll see how much of these I actually end up doing :)

Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you're participating in Snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. What drew you to it? What did you take away from it? What do you hope to accomplish this year?

I like reccing, and also the only time I've actually done the challenge it inspired me to go talk to [personal profile] philomytha, which I might never have done otherwise — and my life would have been immeasurably poorer for that, because she is awesome. So. Let's try it out. (…and skip day 2, right off the bat :) )

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

Yuletide reveal and squee

Welp, apparently I really wanted to write fix-it this Yuletide.

My assignment:
The Tale of the White Lady of Iffish (8178 words) by raspberryhunter
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: pre-Ged/Tenar
Characters: Vetch (Earthsea), Yarrow (Earthsea), Tenar (Earthsea), Ged (Earthsea)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Misses Clause Challenge, Pre-Relationship
Summary:

It is not told in the Deed of Seren how Tenar of the Ring became the White Lady of Iffish. This is that story.

I was thrilled to get the chance to write something nice for [personal profile] rachelmanija. She had such great prompts — "Does Vetch ever leave his island again?" "I'd love to see Vetch meeting Tenar," "The prompts for Vetch could also be used for Yarrow," "How did Yarrow get the harekki?" and (okaay, this was not exactly a prompt, more a side comment, but still) "I wonder if there's a clutch of harrekki eggs somewhere, and maybe Tenar gets one…" and, uh, in one sense I basically wrote three stories with all those prompts, smooshed them together, and gave them all to rachel, figuring that at least one of them would appeal to her :)

But it's also one story (and was always meant to be one story as well as three). When I read Tehanu this year for canon review, my main takeaway was that post-Atuan!Tenar really needed All The Hugs, and what was Ged even thinking to take her to Ogion.(I love Ogion. I love him a lot. In many ways he was probably great for Tenar. But she's a 16-year-old girl who has been through a lot, not exactly his specialized skill set, whereas brash overconfident teenage boy… might be.) So this is the story of how Tenar figures herself out after the events of Atuan, and how in a gentler world she might have had a bit more relevant help and friendship on that journey.

As usual, I was really, really trying to write something recip would like, and as usual, a bunch of my psyche got dumped into it wholesale along the way without my realizing it. Fairly far into the editing process I realized this could totally be coded as the story of how Tenar decides she isn't going to go into academia. Ha.

I also had a lot of fun writing both Vetch and Yarrow shipping Ged/Tenar :)

[personal profile] sprocket honestly deserves a medal for this one. She put so much into this, from calming me down through several rounds of Yuletide nerves ("What if my story is crap? What if recip hates it? Is it crap?? What about now??") to (as always) pointing out kindly and ruthlessly how it could be several orders of magnitude better, to holding my hand through several iterations, to talking me through worldbuilding… it is her doing that Iffish became a place where women's magic, while possibly not considered equal (yet!) to a Roke-trained wizard, is more respected and welcomed than on Gont; late one night we jointly came up with a different saying for the East Reach: strange as women's magic, subtle as women's magic. She is super awesome and just gets more awesome whatever I throw at her. Thank you!!

A Cord of Three Strands (4047 words) by raspberryhunter
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Keltiad - Patricia Kennealy-Morrison
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Aeron Aoibhell/Gwydion ap Arawn/Roderick Douglas
Characters: Aeron Aoibhell, Gwydion ap Arawn, Roderick Douglas
Additional Tags: OT3, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Fix-It, OT3 fixes all the things, Yuletide Treat
Summary:

Aeron, Gwydion, and Roderick find together that a cord of three strands is not easily broken.

And then THIS canon! I got most of the way through writing this while waiting for assignments to go out (I swear, this is the story of almost all the treats I write) because Keltia is the awesomesauce crack canon of my formative years. Kennealy literally wrote three very thick books as poem!fic to explain (a poor translation of) the Welsh poem Preiddeu Annwn. If you wanted to win my heart (especially when I was a teenager) with crack I don't know that you could come up with a better way. Plus which they're about a society of Magical Irish People (sorry, "Kelts") who are all tall beautiful magical royalty. (Well, maybe not all Kelts are royalty, but everyone in the books is, pretty much, except for the occasional commoner for spice.) Aeron, the heroine, is red-haired and green-eyed (OF COURSE) and not only the Crown-Princess-then-High-Queen but also the BEST at magic and the BEST at swordplay and the BEST at singing (hilariously, this is a throwaway line in the first book) and the MOST BEAUTIFUL and the MOST EVERYTHING, okay?? And also with a SOULBOND. OF COURSE. Although Keltia is very cool and laidback about sex and marriage because OF COURSE!

Also I was charmed by rosefox asking for queer and OT3, because you have probably figured out from my above description that these books are WOW WISH FULFILLMENT kinds of books. Clearly if Kennealy had been queer and/or poly, it WOULD have been in the books because these books are very clearly all about wish fulfillment. So I mucked around with it, queering up the history and the institutions and the characters, and using it to fix everything. Because apparently I am also into writing OT3's fixing everything! Also there was a small Judaism-ish reference, for which I spent a while one evening looking up how to form the genitive in Gaelic, which I probably did incorrectly.

Kennealy also has this very distinctive mannered style that never lets up — the problem with a lot of not-so-great writers is that they can't maintain style appropriately, but Kennealy never, ever drops the style. It's pretty great. Hopefully I made a good stab at it. It was certainly a lot of fun to write (and a lot quicker than trying to write Le Guin pastiche, which wow, verges on poetry).

[personal profile] sprocket also did a great job on beta for this one, going above and beyond by doing a (looooong) book's worth of canon review, although because it was a treat and not for someone I know, she did not have to do nearly the stress job of calming me down for this one :) (Any remaining typos are my responsibility. Because of Holiday Stuff I did not have time to do the second round of beta on this.)

In other news, I found out [personal profile] zdenka was my writer, which I had not managed to guess AT ALL. Which now I feel like I should have been able to guess, because I loved my Yuletide fic so much! :) Thank you again, and again, you should all go read it! Anyway, Yuletide was basically completely fabulous for me this year! <3

Yuletide 2016 reveal!

This is the first year since I started Yuletide that I've written only one fic. Mostly because life is just super busy these days, but partially because this fic kind of kicked my butt:

The Minnow and the Dragon (3100 words) by raspberryhunter
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Yarrow (Earthsea), Vetch (Earthsea)
Additional Tags: Brother-Sister Relationships, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary: Vetch and Yarrow: an afternoon together, a short journey, and what they find at the end of it.

Recip said they liked domestic and sense of place, so I tried to put that in as much as possible, but in discussion with [personal profile] sprocket I said, well, I hope they don't mind domestic with dragons. Because I fell shatteringly and completely in love with Earthsea's dragons when I first read these books, and although my first couple of tries didn't have dragons (the first try also had Penthe, until I determined I would need either more time or more inspiration than I had to write her), it was probably inevitable that a dragon was going to make her way in, somehow. When I reread Wizard of Earthsea and remembered how much I love Vetch and Yarrow, the fic started assembling itself.

I also had read [personal profile] rachelmanija's letter in which she expressed her love for the first couple of books of Earthsea, and I also wanted to give her something she would love, so I spent a while trying to figure out how to write in that style. (Huh! On rereading I see she says she loves dragons as well. That was a complete coincidence, as I didn't remember that at all.) I find writing Le Guin pastiche to be very difficult, which I wasn't expecting when I started -- after all, I wrote 10k words of reasonable pastiche of Fountainhead treatfic last year in a couple of (admittedly extremely stressful) weeks, why did 3k of Earthsea knock me over? I think first of all Le Guin is just a really really good writer (whereas, I'm sorry, Ayn Rand is definitively not) and therefore hard for me to mimic, but compounding the difficulty is that my natural writing style is almost diametrically opposed to hers. Her writing is spare, poetic, incisively observant, lovely to read aloud. Mine is prolix and mundane and written by someone who doesn't think about words as auditory and therefore tends not to read well aloud without a fair amount of editing, and is liable to go rambling off without letting anyone know where it began or where it's going to end. (And is therefore a muuuuch better match for Rand-pastiche. I'm not sure I like what this says about me...) As usual, this fic would not have been nearly as good had it not been for [personal profile] sprocket, who with her usual superlative tact and kindness described all the things that were wrong about it but which I was unable to myself articulate, as well as a couple of things I had no idea were problems until she opened my eyes to them.

One of the things I wanted to do with this fic was to address a dichotomy in Vetch's character in Wizard. He is an extremely kind, perceptive, wise person. He's not arrogant or prideful at all (unlike Jasper or Ged). At the same time, everything in his interactions with his sister Yarrow is a little over-condescending, in a way that probably partially has to do with being an older sibling (...not that I would know anything about that!) and partially clearly has to do with the gender issues Le Guin saw in Earthsea later on. I like to think that Vetch got over that, because he's definitely awesome in ways that would help him realize what he was doing and, well, stop it.

A related thing I wanted to do with this story is the same thing that Le Guin was trying to do inTehanu: show that "women's work" (in particular emotional labor and the kinds of things that go along with it, such as noticing people and their problems), and women (in a world where men hold the power), have value and importance. I have a lot more respect for Le Guin's attempt in Tehanu now, because it's a difficult problem. Jo Walton identified the problem better than I could:

I also felt, and still feel, that Le Guin is speaking with a double tongue in this book. On the one hand she’s saying very clearly that women’s domestic lives are central and important, and on the other the force of story is bending everything to have an actual plot, which needs an evil wizard and men and the world of action... She says that women’s lives matter, but she shows that they don’t, that what matters is magic and power and calling on dragons.

And in the fic, too, I wanted to show that Yarrow's domestic life is central and important. But then there's the double-tongue problem again: one could say that the plot of the fic implies her skills in the area of domesticity and emotional labor are only important because it allowed her to deal with a dragon. On the other hand, that's part of the point as well: that until Vetch could see Yarrow's domestic life in his sphere of dragon-banishing, he had no frame of reference for understanding that it, and she, are important. And (at least to a certain extent) she has to come to that realization as well, as she also lives in this culture.

But anyway, in conclusion, yay domesticity and yay dragons! (I have more to say about dragons in my related book-post here.)

Dear Yuletide 2016

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I, er, seem to have written a lot of words this year. Feel free to ignore pretty much all of them! I love seeing how other people think about my favorite fandoms, and I love seeing interpretations that are different from mine (some of my favorite fics are the ones that made me look at things in a new way). Please do not feel like you need to follow any of my prompts!

Her Smoke Rose Up Forever )

Tillerman Cycle )

Der Ring des Nibelungen )

General. )

Consuming canon: The shortest (though IMO the most difficult) is no doubt Tiptree; you could just read one short story and write a fic based on it. The list of short stories in Smoke is here:

The list of stories: )

Googling many of these will give you text, some of which is even legal. For example, here is an official web reprint of "Love is the Plan the Plan is Death".

Much of the Ring Cycle is available on Youtube. I'm basically imprinted on the Boulez version of Die Walkure with Donald McIntyre and Gwyneth Jones, available with English subs here (Acts I and II) and here (Act III). The Boulez version of Rheingold is also here.

I also rather liked the Sawallisch version of Walkure here (Part 1) and here (Part 2), although I think Wotan's hat is really weird.

Librettos are also available free on the web — English translations here and here, and probably other places of which I am unaware. I really like Andrew Porter's English translation, which is available on Amazon.

The Tillerman Cycle books are all in print and seem to be generally available at libraries, and they are very fast reads (probably faster than Tiptree despite being more pages, and certainly much more calming and affirming to read). Writing about Jeff only would take reading A Solitary Blue and Seventeen Against the Dealer. Writing about Mina would mostly involve reading Come A Stranger and probably at least skimming Seventeen Against the Dealer. James or Sammy or Maybeth would probably involve reading most of the books, but particularly Dicey's Song and Sons From Afar and Seventeen.

Juuuukebox

Jukebox! (The link goes to the DW comm post with a link to both the collection and to a playlist of all the songs, which I found very helpful.)

There are only a couple of hours until reveal. Until then, I would like to say that one of the great charms of Jukebox is that it's a lot of the same people doing it every year (and that I've interacted with somewhat in other exchanges, most notably Yuletide), and I really love and respect the writing of so many of these people. So I'm going to put down some guesses, while it's (barely) still anonymous!

First, my INCREDIBLY AWESOME GIFT:

Every year, a young woman goes up the mountain to challenge the Year-King for the bone crown. Every year, one of them dies and the other comes down the mountain as King. It is unusual for a Year-King to survive more than one such battle.

Lussa has survived and won three times. But her fourth battle, her third defending the crown, brings her a choice that she never thought she would face.

I have a very strong idea that this is [livejournal.com profile] lignota. Here it's the amazingly beautiful fantasy cadences of the writing, and the wonderful worldbuilding and seemingly-effortless seamless and satisfying plotting, that remind me of her writing :)

I don't actually know who wrote this, but I want to know. My best guess is [personal profile] morbane, because it fits together so very well, with all the details coming together as we learn the whole story, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't her.

I could be wrong about all of these, because there are a ton of wonderful writers who do Jukebox! Very worth checking out :) I felt like there were a bunch of very strong stories this year.

(I think mine is less guessable than average, this year, since I wrote something a little less like what I normally write for Jukebox, although I'd be super interested to see if anyone did guess.)

Dear Jukebox 2016

Dear Jukebox Operator,

Thanks so much for writing one of my songs! I really love all these songs, as well as have questions about them, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you write! (This letter is geared towards fanfic, as it's what I know most about, but I would adore fanart or podfic treats :) )

General. )

I have some suggestions below, but really, feel free to do whatever idea these songs give you. I picked these songs because they seem to have a lot of stories hidden in them, and if you find a story that's totally different from the ones I see offhand (and have thus provided vague prompts for), then I would be so thrilled to see that additional interpretation of the song. I love seeing how other people think about things. PLEASE feel free to totally ignore anything written below.

Songs. )

Seriously, if you wanted to write a story that was just inspired by the imagery in these songs, I would be so up with that. I want you to take one (or more!) of these songs and make something fascinating out of them, however you feel is the best way to do that, so don't let anything I've written here stop you from doing what YOU want to do with any of these songs! And thank you!

Yuletide gifts and reveal

I am sure no one is surprised that I am running very much behind. :) I got two Mabinogion Arianrhod-centric gifts, yay!! The Mabinogion cannot have too much fic written about it, is my opinion.

all that's best of dark and bright (1483 words) by betony

Fandom: Mabinogion (Myth)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Arianrhod, Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Gwydion (Mabinogion)
Additional Tags: POV First Person
Summary:

Arianrhod, in her own words.

My lovely lovely gift, with Arianrhod explaining things to Llew Llaw Gyffes — and, as I requested, without her having to hate him!! YAY. (Also I was pretty sure that I had read the author before, though I couldn't guess who it was — and I have! This is my second gift from betony, who also wrote me a lovely fic for jukebox a couple years back. Much love!)

Additional Tags: Incest, Animals having sex in heat, Yuletide Treat, Yuletide 2015, Rape/Non-con Elements
Summary:

Arianrhod knew one thing. She did not want Goewin's fate. To sit in the rushes where the dogs shat with an old man's feet in her lap.

She wanted to spend her hours as she wished, weaving ribbons for the night sky.

And I got a treat too! This one fleshes out the story of the Fourth Branch and the relationship between Goewin and Arianrhod (which is sadly nonexistent in canon). Yay!

I wrote two fics too. )

Dear Yuletide 2015

Dear yuletide writer,

Thank you for writing for me! Feel free to ignore these words — I love seeing how other people think about my favorite fandoms, and I love seeing interpretations that are different from mine (some of my favorite fics are the ones that made me look at things in a new way).

Der Ring des Nibelungen, Miss Marple, Susan Calvin, and Mabinogion. )

General. )

Consuming canon: I think all my canons are fairly easy to find this year. The easiest to find and shortest canon here is the Mabinogion. I grew up with the Charlotte Guest version which is available via Gutenberg. I also found a great translation with footnotes online here. (The Fourth Branch is the only part of the Mabinogion where Arianrhod appears.)

Most of the Susan Calvin stories are all collected in I, Robot, which is easily available at libraries and online. There are more sprinkled here and there -- I think All the Robot Stories has them all -- but the ones in I, Robot would be enough to go off of; my favorites are "The Evitable Conflict" and "Intuition," the latter of which isn't in I, Robot.

And the Miss Marple books and stories are, of course, easily accessible in libraries and online. Lucy Eyelesbarrow appears in 4:50 from Paddington, which was published in the US as What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw. (She's mostly the same character in every book, so reading one or two would be enough to go off of.)

ETA 10-19-15 to add more prompts for Miss Marple and to add that AUs are welcome.

Martha had always played by the rules, until she met a beautiful woman with some very concerning things to say about the government.

I asked for a story where memory wipes really could take that away from you, and this story delivers, with dystopia and love and catastrophe!

---------------------------------------

I got matched on Seanan McGuire's song "How Much Salt," and I found the liner notes very intriguing: The Little Mermaid and her mother, and a story that never ends. I thought that was really neat, and this story resulted: a slant look at "The Little Mermaid," informed by the song, from the point of view of the princess whom the prince marries.

Many thanks to [personal profile] sprocket for beta, and to [personal profile] rymenhild for Reasons. :)

dear jukebox 2015

Dear Jukebox Operator,

Thanks so much for writing one of my songs! I really love all these songs, as well as have questions about them, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you write!

Chanson de Melisande (Youtube, lyrics) - This is just a spooky song. Why are the daughters blind? Why are they locked up? Why are they expecting a prince, and why doesn't he come? What happens once the light goes out? This could be either dark and tragic or have an ending where they somehow manage to escape. Or both!

Ordinary Town - Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer (Youtube, lyrics) - "Go home, go home" the mayor cried when jesus came to city hall, 'cause /This is an ordinary town, and the prophet stands alone/ This is an ordinary town and we crucify our own... I am curious about the story where Jesus comes to town and the Mayor tells him to go away because they are busy crucifying their own, thank you very much, he's just going to have to get crucified somewhere else... but really anything about this song would be very neat, don't feel like you have to be restricted to that!

They Can't Take That Away from Me - George Gershwin and Ira Gerswin (Song): Youtube, lyrics. Okay, this is the one where I actually want something specific: the dark sci-fi AU where memory wipes are on the table. If you signed up hoping to do a more conventional take, well… convince me! :) (I don't remember anything about Crazy for You, so don't worry about that canon at all.)

Der Zwerg - Franz Schubert: Youtube, lyrics. Another one I fell in love with during last year's Jukebox! What's going on? I suppose a love triangle would be the most "straightforward" explanation, but it just seems like there might be a more interesting story there, especially given the complicated and sometimes contradictory-seeming actions of the characters. (Especially given that the queen can... hear the stars prophesy to her? What?)

The Hymn of Acxiom - Vienna Teng: Youtube, lyrics. I really think this song is so interesting -- okay, especially because I think the voice-combining is neat, but it also goes well with the song content. I feel that we have a very great need to be accepted for what we are and to be known, and that's the promise of religion -- and of data science for shopping. And though in principle I don't like that various retailers know so much about me, in practice I seem to delight in giving them information and cookies and so on. It would be interesting to have a fic that looked at that tension in some way. (Crossovers are great in general; this one seems like it might lend itself very well if you are into that. Basilio as either the victim or master of the voices? The dwarf driven mad by the culture of conspicuous consumption? BRING IT ON.)

In quegli anni - Mozart/Da Ponte: Youtube, lyrics. Basilio's aria from Le Nozze di Figaro has always both delighted and baffled me. The story of how Don Basilio learned that "with a skin of an ass one may escape shame, danger, dishonor, and death" has really nothing to do with what's going on at the time (maybe thematically, sure, but not emotionally or narratively -- watching the opera one feels like the action just stops for Basilio to tell his story, then starts again). It's a metaphorical story, right? If so, what was the real story behind it? What was the shame and dishonor that Basilio escaped? How did Dame Common Sense give him the skin of the ass? Or: if you take it to be a literal story, how did that even happen? (Did Basilio somehow wander into the corner of a fairy tale, as a supporting character? If so, what happened when he met the main characters?) Of course, I do NOT expect you to know anything about Nozze. Since Basilio is reminiscing about when he was a young man of quite different personality, you certainly need not know anything about his current personality. For that matter, feel free to name the main character something besides Basilio if you prefer. And set it in spaaaace, or random SF/fantasy milieu, or a contemporary setting, or whatever, of course!

General: Things I love (I don't expect these by any means, this is just a random sampling of Things I Like): I love worldbuilding fic and plotty fic because I have a hard time writing it myself, but by the same token I know it is hard to write and I certainly don't expect it. I love character-driven fic that thinks hard about the ramifications of characters' choices. I love for there to be some sort of character arc or characters (and/or the reader) coming to a greater understanding of something or someone during a fic. I love and adore friendship/partnerships, especially platonic ones, of all gender-variety (although in these songs I don't know that it's a thing for any of them). I love it when all the characters are understandable rather than straight-out villainous or malicious, or where expectations of malice are subverted. I am more a fan of gen than anything else, but I'm open to both het and slash.

Things I don't like: gratuitous violence; I'm not a huge fan of anything above PG-13 and will probably skim over anything really explicit unless something about the explicitness itself plays into character or plot development, in which case all bets are off :) Darkfic is fine for any of these, as is any kind of AU (fantasy, SF, corporate, academia, cyberpunk ...?)
