Day 4 Theme - Needs

Today's theme is Needs.

Here are a few ideas to get you started: Even if one of your favorite characters is an action hero, she still has basic needs that has to be met. Food, shelter, the need for companionship, the need for intimacy, the need to be alone. How does she make sure that her needs are fulfilled? Does she have a hard time asking for help? Does she have an unusual reaction to getting something that she didn't even realize that she needed?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

She feels this anger, that is and isn't hers. It's in her blood and her bones, this ancestral pain, reasons forgotten but injustice still so keenly felt. All there's left of the Titans is this pain, loud, incoherent, overwhelming, threatening to overtake her. She's only a voice for this anger so long unheard, she's only…

“You're Lace Harding! You're more than this rage!” Rook's voice just barely cuts through the screaming. “You believe that the world is beautiful! That people are good! Hold on to it! Hold on to who you are!”

And it means something that it's Rook telling her this, because she doesn't believe that, because she spent most of her life in Tevinter and saw enough to mistrust even the people who say they want to help. When Lace met her, she was all anger and pain, not for herself, but for every slave in Tevinter. Anger over the injustices that someone else suffered, that she felt that she couldn't do enough to stop. But Lace couldn't help her by agreeing with her anger, as justified as it might have been. And she couldn't meet the Shade's anger with more anger now.

She reached out to the red lyrics given shape and voice, her face staring back at her in anger, and she wants to give in to it too, but she knows better. She meets the Shade not with rage but with compassion, because this is who she is, who she's always been, but kindness is a choice and it's one that she has to keep making, even when it's hard, even when it hurts.

She takes all that pain, and she offers them kindness and compassion. This might not be enough to heal what's left of the Titans, but she hopes it eases their pain.

Reccer's Notes: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. This everything I love in a good remix of Greek goddesses. The Amphitrite is not the Amphitrite in the book series, which the author warns for - nor is the Poseidon (he's closer to his mythological counterpart) - but it's a very lovely what-if. A very good way to pick up these characters, shake them, throw them onto the Yahtzee board, and see how they might have mixed together in a different way, in a way that prioritized their lives over The Big Three. Sally and Amphitrite are both The Caregivers here, and that theme is repeated.

Author's Notes: This fic does take Sweet Valley High's crack seriously - that means all of the bullying Robin Wilson sustained for her weight, the twins constantly mentioning their "perfect size 6" bodies, etc. Not to mention the fatshaming that happens throughout the series. There are mentions of eating disorders, diet culture and everything that goes with both in this fic, though it is told from Claudia's POV, as told to her by Olivia.

Notes: With this prompt, my mind went straight to Cassandra's quest, Guilty Pleasures. The serious and responsible Seeker can't be caught enjoying the romance books of the guy she once arrested, right?

Guilty Pleasures

Finding Cassandra is trivial, even if she thinks that she's hiding. Not hiding so much that someone who did find her would have just cause to accuse her of hiding, but hiding nonetheless, at a spot in the yard that, while still out in the open, would only be visible by people passing by.

“You know, if you wanted Varric's book this badly, I could have taken it for you,” Leliana says, arriving quietly enough that her words are the first thing to betray her presence.

Cassandra nearly throws the books in the air, then holds it protectively against her chest, as if she means to hide the cover. The problem is, Leliana was at Kirkwall, she was witness when Cassandra first got her hands on Swords & Shields and all the excuses that she has for reading it. It's a terribly guarded secret, but at least Cassandra is far better at that with things that matter.

“I don't know what you're talking about. I… did the Inquisitor tell you to?” Cassandra asks, with a sigh of resignation.

“Oh no, she told no one, except for Varric. And then they were talking about it, loudly, in public. She's trying to understand what's so special about this story to make it a secret,” Leliana says, although she had found out through other sources before that as well.

She says it more to illustrate a point, if Cassandra wanted it to remain a secret, then she shouldn't have asked for the Inquisitor's help. The Inquisitor does get things done, but she's not always the best with expectations of privacy.

“I should have known. I should have known better than to let myself get carried away, but the last one ended in a cliffhanger and I just needed to know what happened to the Knight-Commander,” Cassandra says, as if she needs to justify her reading habits.

Leliana laughs. “Don't be silly, just read your books. The world is not going to end because you took an hour to yourself. It might still end, but it won't be for this.”

Cassandra looks around, but no one seems to be noticing them talking there, and to anyone out of earshot, they might as well be talking about some important Inquisition matter.

“I suppose I can stay here another few minutes. I only have fifteen pages to go,” Cassandra says, opening the book again.

Leliana leaves her be. Good on her, they all have such weight on their shoulders, they won't last long without a few guilty pleasures.

Labyrinth: The Graphic Novel

It seems like every time I turn around there's a new Labyrinth comic or book or artbook being released. I just got the rereleased 1986 comicbook adaptation last year! But I went into the city recently, and in a major bookstore walked past the comics section on the way to another section, and my eye got caught by a hardback with an instantly recognisable cover.

I stopped in my tracks and had a vicious battle with my dodgy mobile internet to check if this is an actual new thing or a different print of the Marvel comicbook I already had.

It's a new thing! With new artwork! And based on the novelisation instead of the movie itself, so there are differences! I haven't read the full thing yet, but I did browse the pages to check out the artwork, which is stylised and although I do love how Sarah and the creatures of the Labyrinth look, it is hard to capture that magical feeling that is Jareth, king of the goblins.
