Yuletide reveal
The assignment I wrote was Some Desperate Glory, because
cenozoicsynapsid's prompt for Yingli Lin was amazing and i couldn't stop thinking about it (we actually matched on something different). Tesh said in an interview that SDG is "about being the very worst person imaginable, and then trying to be better. It’s a book about the end of the world, and what happens after. It’s a book about survival, and hope, and change." How does that change for an adult who was smart enough all along to know damn well what she was doing and that she should have known better?

Summary:
It also occurred to me that a lot of the thinking I was doing about Lin was also directly relevant to some of
hamsterwoman's prompts, which also included asking about Lin, and so I could sort of write two fics for the price of one :) Also, I rather liked her prompt about training sets and that ending of SDG, stuck in the third universe but without anyone questioning the Wisdom about it, and was happy to take the opportunity to flesh out the ending with my own headcanon and make it make more sense than it did purely textually. So, this treat was outlined pretty much at the same time as my assignment, and then writing it down afterwards was comparatively very quick. (I would have been shocked if
hamsterwoman didn't guess who I was immediately, which it looks like she did :) Even my beta was like, "You know [the training set part of the fic] will de-anon you immediately, right?" Well, yes, but that was her prompt!)

Summary:
I rather enjoyed writing Avi as a quintessentially unreliable narrator who gets upset at Lin for being afraid right after admitting to himself that he's been afraid of confronting Lin being unconscious and possibly dead (and by extension, afraid of confronting her sacrifice, though I only realized afterwards that I should have talked about that a little more at the end).
Many many thanks for both of these to my beta
sprocket, who I kept pinging to talk to about cults and sunk cost fallacy and why Lin, who could very well have had reasonable reasons for going to Gaea, would have stayed there. (Sunk cost fallacy, plus all the other reasons that otherwise reasonable people do stay in cults and abusive relationships. Figuring out how to convey this in a fic, especially in some sort of gradual fashion, took me forever, and
sprocket figuratively held my hand throughout the entire thing and steered me away from dangerous terrain.) And also I am indebted to
sprocket for pointing out that Tesh almost never (never?) uses semicolons in SDG; this was a problem stylistically for me, as I use semicolons all the time; and she managed to wrest most of them from me :)

"Why put us here, in this universe?"
Avi has two meetings after the events of canon. He isn't very happy at either of them.

I mean, I guess, conceivably, it could've been someone who had followed the link in my letter back to your post (or was a flister of yours who had read that discussion in the wild) and decided to write your headcanon, but, yeah, I was pretty sure you were the author pretty much from seeing the summary. The only thing that gave me pause was the Avi/Mags tag, because I recalled from your original writeup that you were not a fan of that ship. But then I actually read it, and was quite sure again, and even more sure once I'd read the Lin fic. I think I would have figured out they were by the same author anyway -- the Lin moments are very consistent :) -- but I also noticed the shared "the canon is the warning" tag
-- which actually led to a handful of your other, non-anon, fic once I clicked it :PI LOVED

Ooh, it's really neat to hear about the process!
as I use semicolons all the time; and she managed to wrest most of them from me :)
LOL!
I will save the textual stuff for the other post, but yay SDG Yuletide! <3

Yeah, I wish there were a way of tagging "background" relationships on AO3, because it's often the case that I want to signal that "yes, Avi and Mags are together in this fic and I think you should know that, but it's not a big thing." Or, you know, whatever :)

LOLOLOLOL! I... apparently have a thing for dark canons! (I feel bad using "No Archive Warnings Apply" when there's, like, discussion of killing billions and trillions of sentient beings... but I also feel like "Choose Not to Warn" could be anything! I suppose next time I could use "canon-appropriate levels of X.")
I LOVED [personal profile] cenozoicsynapsid's Lin prompts, and was so happy that they got written! and in such an in-depth way, too!
Aw, thank you, and yesss their prompts and your prompts were SO GOOD! I loved all of your Avi prompts, even though I don't think I would be capable of writing most of them :)
Yes, yay SDG Yuletide! :D <3
