Hilarious and sometimes unexpectedly moving 18th C Groundhog Day fic, filled with banter and plot! I don't think you need to know canon as most of it is explained in the fic, though it would be helpful to know that Frederick the Great (Fritz) had a valet who he cared deeply about (Fredersdorf) as well as a brother who drove him nuts and vice versa because they were so alike (Heinrich).

Extremely serious crack Arm Joe fic (Arm Joe is a Les Mis-inspired fighter video game, and it is exactly as completely off-the-wall as you might expect from that description -- and if you know Les Mis and don't know Arm Joe, and a lot of flashing lights don't bother you, please go watch an Arm Joe youtube video, perhaps this one) that integrates Arm Joe and Hugo-esque prose in a way I would not have realized could be done before reading it.

Utterly delightful and pitch-perfect crossover between Dark Lord of Derkholm and the Howl books (including Castle in the Air). I suppose it helps to be at least passingly familiar with both fandoms, but I think you could read it fandom-blind. And if you know any physics, the first chapter is even more delightful! (And regardless of whether you do or don't, it's a rather elegantly-put-together magical system that can be read without knowing canon.)

Don't need to know canon (source: loved it, have not yet read canon although now I have to), but if you don't know canon you might want to know a little math or at least be familiar with math education to find it as hilarious as I found it :)
