...why not? I don't have too many, but...

I currently have 28 works archived at AO3.

Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 28 (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.

I like nothing more than to natter on solipsistically about my own fics, and [personal profile] ollipop requested, so!

The Family Business is this Greek Myth SF-virtual-reality AU in which the Olympian gods are the executive management team for a large virtual-reality ("simspace") corporate entity. The story's about Minerva and her (and her family's) involvement in this simspace business, including a retelling of the Arachne story.

ExpandCut for lots of talk about writing this fic, and themes, and things I thought were themes but maybe weren't so much. Spoilers for the story, of course! Artistry. Truth. Family. )

Last week I wrote the first draft my story for rarewomen and was very pleased with it. Then I let it sit for a week.

Last night I looked at it again, and it's a piece of crap. I think maybe half of it is salvageable; the other half will have to be completely rewritten. Bah.

(...and this is why I usually need at least two months for any sort of fic thing...)

Dear self,

I don't care how excited you are about yuletide letters about [fandoms redacted until post-yuletide], you are not allowed to write yuletide [fandom] fic treats, even if they are about your two favorite characters, until a) you finish [consuming one of the fandoms in question], and b) you work through or at least agree to give up on the THREE PLOT BUNNIES you are performing vast quantities of research on for yuletide, EVEN THOUGH SIGNUPS JUST OPENED, and c) your ACTUAL YULETIDE FIC, which may or may not be one of the three plot bunnies, is outlined and mostly written. Yes, even if that means the treats you're itching to write don't get written. Also remember this December is likely to be a great deal more crazy than last December in real life.

Dear self, in case you didn't know, you are obsessive.

Thanks,
me.

beta?

So would anyone be willing to beta the mostly-final-draft of the last two-thirds of my monster OUAT fic? (My fabulous sister's been pinch-beta'ing, but she's getting really busy and I am not sure she'll be able to continue.)

I've started posting it, so the plot/character arcs are pretty much set in stone at this point, as well as any deep substantive issues that I haven't managed to fix yet. What I'm looking for at this point are things on the order of "this sentence is awkward" up to "This scene doesn't work" or "This character would never say that" or "I had a really hard time getting through this scene because the characters keep jumping around in conversation" or "Are they actually spending this whole conversation talking right next to the door?"

The catch is... it's 30k (I've posted 10k already, leaving 20k, but it might be nice to read the first 10k to see what's going on), I'm currently posting chapters regularly twice a week, and I really really want to get it out before the second season premiers at the end of September. So this is going to be two to three installments a week of about 1000-2000 words each. Now, it's pretty much all written, so I can give it to you almost all at once if you'd prefer, but I'm going to need a fairly steady stream of input. (To be fair, it would also totally be okay if you had to skip one or two installments; partial beta beats no beta!)

You don't have to have familiarity with Once Upon a Time, but it would probably help with reading for characterization (it's an AU, so it's not really strictly necessary as long as it's internally consistent). The fic does spoil the entire first season.

(For those of you for whom it's relevant, it's rather more fleshed out than the first draft!)

Any takers? :)

hmm.

Beta response (including NoLongerKid, who also got conscripted into reading it) to my NPT monster 20k fic: going to have to be majorly reworked. I think I kind of knew this when I sent it out to beta, but I was successfully repressing the part of myself that was telling myself that... With the pushing back of the NPT deadline, it turned out I might have time to rework it after all, and so I started, and then I realized that a) once I carefully thought through one of the major characters, I found he was going to have to be deleted because he could not coexist with one of the requested plot elements, and b) I am not capable of thinking through one of the major things I'd have to think through to make it work. (Or at least I'm not capable of wanting to do it enough?)

At some point I'll have to make a post on how incredibly awesome betas are (I've been lucky enough to always have really, really great betas). But right now I have to work on what I'm writing instead (which to be fair is cribbing liberally from the monster)... this one is significantly less ambitious, but rather better written (though it's got its own problems), and started out as 1k and is now 4k and counting. Sigh. Still, if it doesn't get too much longer, I'm hopeful that it'll be a size where I can actually mess with it properly.

I thought my not_primetime fic was going to be, you know, 1000-3000 words. Maybe 4000, pushing it.

Then I decided to go with the more complicated prompt, because without doing so I couldn't figure out how to make the simple prompt to work, and... 19k and counting (although nearly done). AUGH!
