I got two brilliant presents for the [personal profile] candyheartsex exchange! :D

The first is a lovely set of vignettes describing the writer Voltaire and his partner in Enlightenment, Émilie du Châtelet, who was an awesomely cool scientific thinker whom I had never heard of before getting into this fandom. (The endnote says a little more about her.) You could read this knowing nothing about Émilie but in that case I suspect it would help to know a little about Voltaire -- just knowing he was a famous snarky writer is probably good enough; this story would be appropriate background.
