My assignment was Agatha Christie's Parker Pyne, which I had a blast with because I love those stories a lot, and I love Claude and Madeleine and their hilarious over-the-topness, which I hope I captured a little of in the story. Thanks to iberiandoctor for beta (including Britpick)!

Like everyone else, I wrote a FAQ: The Snake Fight Portion of Your Thesis Defense fic. Sprocket and iberiandoctor betaed and did a wonderful job. Though to be honest, although I wouldn't have posted if I thought it was a bad story (and I don't think it is), I really wish I had gone through a couple more drafts. (...I had a lot less brainpower and focus for major self-editing this year than I usually do.) Though I suppose I'm not usually confronted with my inadequacies by fourteen (!) other excellent fics written for a fandom, many of which did wonderful things I immediately recognized as weakness in my own fic :)

...If anyone who knew me in grad school ever finds this, I should repeat that the evil advisor in the story (requested by recip!) bears absolutely zero resemblance to my own advisor, who was wonderful :) (Though anyone who knew me in grad school probably knows that.) Nor does Reston bear more than the most superficial resemblance to anyone else I knew in grad school -- though of course one hears stories about other institutions :)

So my goal this Yuletide was NOT to write any historical fandom (because hard!) and just enjoy the excellent stuff that other people wrote. And... that sort of happened? But I'll talk about that a little more in my other journal where all the history people are :P

And, okay, I did write a short outtake, in which Heinrich is actually the author of "Grind," which in this conceit is self-insert fanfic, of course betaed by mildred_of_midgard:
