Dear trick-or-treater,
Thank you for writing for me! I am very excited to get anything from any of these fandoms :D Feel free to use your own ideas or prompts — I love seeing how other people think about my favorite fandoms, and I love seeing interpretations that are different from mine (some of my favorite fics are the ones that made me look at things in a new way). Also, please don't read anything into the amount of stuff I have written for each fandom; I would be extremely pleased to receive anything for any of these, otherwise I would not have requested them. (Since I'm low on time right now, if I've requested the fandom before or if I wrote it early in the letter process, it's more likely to have a lot of stuff written for it.)
For ToT in particular: I interpret trick/treat in the broadest possible way. "Trick" just means I want you to delve into more of the darkness and messiness of the canon. It could have a happy ending, could have a dark ending, could have character death, adultery, people finding out terrible secrets, people's brains getting stuffed into machines, the supernatural, zombie pumpkins, ...I'd love to see whatever you want to write. I'd ask you to tag for dark elements if not already present in canon, but if you tag than go for it!
"Treat," for a dark canon, means something at least slightly happier than what canon gives us. (Sundial, looking at you -- anything happier than "rocks fall everyone dies" counts, including major character death!) For a lighter canon, you can go as dark as you want during the story itself, but I all I mean by "treat" is that I want happy endings for Our Heroes :) Does not have to be fluff (and in fact I tend not to be a big fan of fluff). Cute zombie pumpkins also welcome here :)
General: I am open to most things! I am more a fan of gen than anything else, but I'm totally open to het/slash/femslash. I will enthusiastically read whatever rating you would like to write. I love fork-in-the-road type AUs for any fandom; I don't want setting-changed AU's for these particular canons. I am also totally open to alternative ways of telling stories -- IF, epistolary fic, what-have-you, I'm up for it!
Things I love: (I don't expect all of these by any means, this is just a sampling of Things That Make Me Happy): I love worldbuilding fic and plotty fic because I can't write it myself, but by the same token I know it is hard to write and I certainly don't expect it. I love fork-in-the-road AU's that explore a path that canon didn't give us. I love character-driven fic that thinks hard about the ramifications of characters' choices. I love most of all for there to be some sort of character arc, or characters (and/or the reader) coming to a greater understanding of something or someone during a fic. I love and adore friendship/partnerships, especially platonic ones, of all gender-variety. I love loyalty and duty bonds (and I have a special place in my heart for physical expressions of fealty bonds, like kneeling or ritualized oath-swearing or salutes). I love it when all the characters are understandable rather than straight-out villainous or malicious, or where expectations of malice are subverted. I love when something or some implication is clear to the reader that is not clear to the characters, or some subset of the characters, because we have knowledge (about the actual canon, for example) that they don't have.
Canons:
Babylon 5 (fic, art, trick) - For B5 I have a special request -- I am still watching this canon and the projected end date for finishing S5 is Nov 13. By ToT fic reveals I will definitely have watched up to "Objects in Motion." It is totally okay for you to write me something that has spoilers for "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light," but please tag for episode spoilers (it's totally okay if you remove the tag at author reveals) so you don't inadvertently spoil me, and depending on my available time, be aware that I may read it on the late side. (I will definitely read and comment during the anon period, but it may be later in the anon period!)
So -- I am in the middle of watching this for the first time and am bowled over by just everything!
-Neroon or Delenn/Neroon: I didn't think about him very much until S4, when suddenly I was like WHOA, Neroon is amazing, Delenn and Neroon are hilariously awesome together, I want more Minbari worldbuilding, and now I kind of ship Delenn/Neroon (though also am extremely happy to get Delenn & Neroon and now I'm annoyed I didn't nominate it). Would love fork-in-the-road AU where Neroon lives and they continue plotting politically together (whether it's as a romantic/sexual ship or as non-romantic cautious allies, I would adore either), or canon-compliant (or any other fork-in-the-road AU, for that matter) where they interact and are awesome, presumably before the events of S4. I mean, basically all I want is Delenn and Neroon plotting together and annoying each other :D (Happy or at least hopeful endings for this would be great, though not required.) Neroon interacting with Warrior Caste crewmates would also be great!
Art of Delenn and Neroon annoying each other and/or plotting together (both of them bent over a sheet of paper where they're plotting something??) or how they might have looked at each other at the Starfire Wheel if they'd had time to give each other looks, would be amazing. (Or Neroon by himself of course, maybe on the bridge of his ship or striding purposefully somewhere?)
-Branmer: is a character all about Minbari worldbuilding! The guy who was Religious Caste but decided to be Warrior Caste! Tell me about him -- I would love to see interactions with Neroon and/or Delenn, too.
-Lennier/Delenn and Lennier/Delenn/Sheridan: 5x02 brought home for me what a messy relationship Lennier and Delenn really have. Would love more exploration of that. What happens if either Lennier or Delenn decides they do want to take their relationship sexual? Especially if the other one is shocked and dismayed by it? How much would it break Lennier if Delenn used his vows to get him to do something he knew was wrong but really wanted? Re: Delenn's 5x02 statement "On Minbari, three is a sacred number," what happens if Delenn starts pushing the sacred Minbari concept of polyamory on Sheridan? (I don't actually think that, in canon, polyamory is meant to be a feature of Minbari society, but wouldn't it be interesting if it were?) I understand there may be spoilers involved -- please feel free to add in material from the rest of S5, just tag as requested above. Or, if you want to write something that examines their canon messy relationship but which is not sexual, I would be all over that! (I read their canon relationship as romantic and nonsexual (at least on Delenn's side) but would love to see other takes on it -- I also see it as deeply dysfunctional because of the power differential and Lennier's idolization of Delenn, which doesn't depend on romanticism or sexuality, in the end.) Art of Lennier as Delenn's perfect (but tricky?) knight sans peur et sans reproche would be so great -- e.g. him kneeling to her and presenting her with a sword, something like that? I'd also love humorous art that poked tricky fun at their relationship -- like a cartoon of Lennier and Sheridan both reacting to Delenn's comment about three as a sacred number? Lennier gloating about Delenn forcing a bunch of rituals on Sheridan? Yes please!
-Vir & Lennier - I really love these two, I love them together, I love the scenes with them sitting at the bar and talking to each other and understanding each other completely. Honestly, I just want more of these guys. For this pairing a treat would be fine as well, though if you wanted to use a "trick" to explore their other tricky relationships -- trading tricky thoughts about their bosses? -- I would love that!
-OR. Can you imagine the kind of letter Vir or Lennier would write to Ask a Manager about their bosses? (Extra points if Alison is replaced by the other in the Vir&Lennier pair.) Or Delenn or Neroon about each other??
Fandom-specific DNW: please no overtly terrible ending for Vir or Vir & Lennier's friendship (although I know there's worse Centauri stuff coming in S5 and foreshadowing for that is fine).
18th C CE RPF (fic, art, trick, treat) - aw, my awesomesauce canon! Lots of requests here:
Ship: Émilie du Châtelet/Voltaire (18 CE RPF) - Anything with her being awesome! Double points if it involves science, but it doesn't have to. There are stories about her swordfighting and learning how to win at gambling that may be apocryphal but I don't care if it's strictly historical, I will eat it up! What would Voltaire say to her if he could see her ghost after she died? Would she be all "oh HEY I'm a ghost?? Let's do EXPERIMENTS on my ectoplasm!! Does my ghost have force vive??" (Yes. Yes she would.)
Ship: Frederick the Great & Henry of Prussia (18 CE RPF) - Fritz & Heinrich is my dysfunctional-family OTP. I seriously want anything that speaks to their codependent, can't-live-with-him-can't-live-without-him, l'autre-moi-meme relationship. Just these guys hating and loving each other <3 Heinrich seeing Fritz's ghost after his death?
Ship: Isabella of Parma & Maria Christina Duchess of Tesschen & Joseph II Holy Roman Emperor (18 CE) - Isabella/Maria Christina is canon (through her letters), and then of course Joseph thought Isabella was in love with him and as far as we know never found out differently (though there are rumors that he had read her letters, they don't seem to be backed up by fact). Anything about these guys, really. Does Joseph ever find out?
Ship: Jacob Paul von Gundling & Frederick William I of Prussia (18 CE RPF) - FW was absolutely, insanely terrible to Gundling. What if he came back to haunt FW?
Les Contes d'Hoffman - fic, art, trick
Four Villains & Muse - I watched the 2015 Met On Demand version of this, with Thomas Hampson as the Four Villains and Kate Lindsey as Muse/Nicklausse, and it's staged so that the two of them are always very aware of each other, with Significant Glances and Body Language. Sometimes it almost seems like they're allies (after all, they both want Hoffman to dump the girl(s)), sometimes it seems like they're -- supernatural colleagues? not necessarily working together, but aware of each other's presence, with a certain professional respect, and knowing that they're both not natural, when no one else in the story seems to get how creepy both of them are? -- and sometimes it seems like they're icily polite enemies. I don't even know what's going on with them, but now I'm obsessed with their relationship. Write me a story about what's going on here, or draw me art of it. (I have imprinted on Hampson and Lindsey, and would prefer them in art, but do as you like -- for fic I don't care whether it's specifically 2015 or not, as long as it's about the two of them.) I don't ship them, but I don't oppose them being shipped if your story goes that way.
Pelléas et Mélisande - Debussy/Maeterlinck - fic, art, trick, treat
OK, I love Pelleas et Melisande, I love the lovely ripply music and the mystery of it and how everything seems to exist in this sort of odd shadowy world where things lurk beneath the surface of what we actually see.
...And I realize this makes me a Philistine, but I found myself all through it wanting the actual magical-fantasy-fairy-tale story that keeps being hinted at instead of the highly-symbolic-characterizing-inner-emotions opera that it actually is. Please write this for me! Let the magic wood Golaud is lost in at the beginning be an actual magic wood! The ring Melisande lost -- in a well! -- that Golaud is so concerned about is a magic ring, right? That concerns the health of the kingdom? And what's going on with the cave? And all the water -- is Melisande a water-fairy? Or a nixie who doesn't understand humans? Or is this somehow a Grail story? If you want to put lots of character-specific symbolic stuff in, that's fine and I will be very pleased with it, but I do really want external plot/worldbuilding here if possible :) (If not, I totally understand! Perhaps a fork-in-the-road AU? What would happen if a small change was made -- could this lead to something better for the characters? Is there anything that could have stopped Golaud from his path at the end?)
Not necessary, but I will squee all over it if you redo the conflict between Pelleas and Golaud so either it doesn't exist (or exists in some much lighter form, like Pelleas and Golaud faking conflict for some reason) or is about something else other than a GIRL -- there are so many other possibilities; maybe they disagree as to how the kingdom should be run, or have an argument over how best to save the king or kingdom? Or perhaps Golaud is under a magical compulsion where he can't reveal the exact nature of the magic ring? And as for Melisande herself -- the production I saw had her wafting away in a boat in the end instead of dying, and I would love it if she didn't die, though it's fine if she does; it's canon, after all.
I would absolutely adore art of the magic wood or the magic ring or Melisande as a water-fairy or the Grail as it relates to these characters, or the brothers Pelleas and Golaud somehow interacting in a fairy-tale-like way, or really any sort of fairy-tale-like art -- and not even of the characters, but if you wanted to do a landscape that evoked the music or themes of the opera, I'd love that! I don't know much about Tarot but tarot imagery would be amazing! I would also love an art noveau sort of aesthetic, though I certainly don't expect it.
Sundial - Catriona Ward - fic, treat
By "treat" I just mean that I need the ending to be less horribly depressing! Please write me an ending where therapy exists and they figure out what to do with Annie, or they somehow manage to save some of the click (bonus points if they have some evidence it might actually work long-term), or otherwise make it less terrible.
Or if Pale Callie comes back? Or maybe Pale Callie and Annie somehow hang out and save each other??
Revelator - Daryl Gregory - fic, art, treat, trick
What happens with Ghostdaddy & Sunny and Stella?? What does "ever blooming" mean?? Does it mean that Sunny will live forever? Or is Sunny one of a long line of, well, what she is? Do Stella and Sunny keep on with the running away plan? Would Ghostdaddy ever be able to rejoin its people (...and what would that even mean, now??), or is it stuck here, or does it try to figure out how to get back to them? I'm also just so intrigued by the conflicted emotions that Stella has for Ghostdaddy, and also for Sunny. (I got a wonderful gift for this and I want more :D )
Alternately, I would absolutely love something about Ghostdaddy and what it was thinking/feeling during all those years. The bits we got from its POV were so alien and strange, I loved that. All those bits of "scripture" -- what was it actually *trying* to say? (Was it even trying to communicate?) Did it know that it wasn't getting its message across well at all?
For art, I loooove the cover image and would love something that doesn't have to be in that style at all but that, like the cover, brings across some of the weirdness and beauty and complexity of Ghostdaddy and of this book. Fandom/art-specific DNW: actual realistic depiction of Ghostdaddy as described.
Verity - Colleen Hoover - fic, trick
Ship: Lowen Ashleigh & Jeremy Crawford & Verity Crawford (Verity)
Jeremy Crawford (Verity)
Sooooo would love to know what Jeremy was thinking all through it! Just want something as hilariously bonkers as the book!
Portal (Video Game) - (fic, art, trick) - I absolutely love the little snippets of backstory that we get for these two, and I am here for allllll the dark twisted backstory with Caroline and/or Cave Johnson. He had her put into a computer. I mean, how did that go down? What did Caroline think of all this? Did she know it was coming or was it a complete surprise? Did she know Chell?? Was there some part of her that wanted to save her? What did she think about the moon dust? If you just signed up for Cave, oh man, he is a piece of work and I want more. Tell me all about his (Aperture's) competition with Black Mesa, the more darkly hilarious the better. (I know nothing about Half-Life, but my spouse plays it, so feel free to put in Half-Life jokes if you want and if you inform me I'll get him to explain them to me :D ) I ship Caroline/Cave in its dark twisted dysfunctional dubconny glory, but I'd also be interested in an interpretation that took the "She's married... to SCIENCE!" line more seriously. (Also, okay, I love that line.)
I must confess I'm not entirely sure how to prompt for art for this one, given that we don't ever actually see Caroline or Cave, but anything that has that Portal aesthetic would be great! Fandom/art-specific DNW: detailed realistic portrayal of Caroline and/or Cave (something like silhouettes would be fine).
