Thank you for writing me a fic! Optional details are optional... feel free to ignore any of these; I will be excited to get anything in these fandoms with any of these women! I said most of what I wanted to say prompt-wise in the actual prompts, so I'll just talk a little bit about what I love about the fandoms.

Lord of the Rings: I am a huge Tolkien fangirl. I love his prose and the characters and the deep language-based worldbuilding. I must say I do not love how he does female characters, although I understand completely that a large part of it has to do with the Anglo-Saxon and other mythologies/texts he had in the back of his head. If it's not too obnoxious to say, I'd rather have the matter-of-fact hobbit-based style than the grand sweeping epic style in a fic, because (at least when I try writing it) it's so easy to get the epic style wrong unless one happens to be an Anglo-Saxon scholar. (Though if you can pull it off, more power to you!) [ETA: I've changed my mind about this, actually... grand sweeping epic style is fine, as long as hobbit-style is also there.]

The Secret Garden: I love the hope and growth that shines through in this book, which makes tears come to my eyes every time I read it. I also love the (American version of the) musical with an incredible love and would be happy if you want to take it as canon (or not -- I certainly don't expect you to have watched it).

Vorkosigan Saga: I love the character depth and the detailed world-building plottiness and the humor of these books. I have to say I'm not totally in love with the Ekaterin story (in the sense of, where I'm from? What Miles does is called stalking) which is why my prompt is a bit focused on giving her her own life apart from Miles.

General: Although in general I like dark fic, for these particular fandoms I'd prefer something that ends happily, please! I think for LotR and Vorkosigan I'm leaning towards wanting something plotty (Secret Garden is more about the relationships and characters anyway, though that's not to say that plotty wouldn't be welcomed!), but I would also love something non-plotty if that's how the muse strikes. I also love female friendships, if you couldn't tell... I would also prefer gen for these particular fandoms/women, but I'd be fine with non-explicit canon romance (anything above PG-13 or so I may only skim over, however).

(And if you get stuck on your match, Secret Garden is a really fast read.)

Thank you again!

"Where's Julian? He's usually the first one here!"

"Oh, him," O'Brien said. "He's probably still working on planning that party for Garak. He's a little obsessed."

Near-simultaneously, Kira said, "I'll say"; Odo said, "And what if he is?"; Dax said "Ah, it's cute"; and Worf said, "It is unbecoming."

A03 link here.

I had a blast writing this yuletide treat for [personal profile] elegantpi, which I wrote most of while waiting for assignments to go out, totally randomly because the prompt caught my eye and I kept coming up with different slice-of-life scenes in my head that had been in the prompt, and finally I was all, oh, what the heck, I'm just going to sit down and write all these things down. I... never saw myself as a slash writer, ever, and ElegantPi didn't even request it (though said it would be fine), but I have trouble writing Garak even though he is my favorite character (...perhaps these two things are related, actually), and he demanded something to take the attention off the fact that I can't really write him well, and he seemed happy with Julian to do that, so. Sneaky bastard, is Garak!

So so many thanks to my beta, [livejournal.com profile] infinimato, who graciously agreed to beta for a complete stranger, and who besides making the overall writing much stronger also articulated exactly what was wrong with the last scene and how to fix it, thank you! Also thanks to the Misses Clause Challenge, without which Kira and Jadzia would not have known about Portal.

A man's death here, a woman's life there, a child lost: they start to lose meaning, for a king.

Hebrew Bible (Abigail, Bathsheba), gen, various warnings tagged: AO3 link here.

I really, really loved writing this yuletide fic for [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant (um, does anyone know whether s/he has actually seen it? If you ever see the fic, quasiradiant, I hope you like it!), which was the best fandom/set of characters imaginable. I had about an hour of WHAT WAS I THINKING panic when I got the assignment, and then on reread was all THIS IS AWESOME. I wrote more about how awesome 2 Samuel is, and some of my thoughts about the characters, in my books/media-rant journal here.

Many, many profuse thanks to my betas, [personal profile] thistleingrey and [personal profile] orichalcum, who, besides pointing out logical, historical, and diction errors, also both independently and for different reasons made me take out a scene that didn't work and replace it with the one containing Michal. Who is awesome, and it is sort of unbelievable to me now that she wasn't in before. Also thanks to the Misses Clause Challenge, without which Maacah would not have been a character either.

Oh Yuletide! This is my first yuletide, and not coincidentally the first time I have wallowed in the awesomeness of yuletide reveal. I have recs, mostly for fics and/or fandoms that haven't gotten a huge number of hits (both because I tend to like the more obscure fandoms and because I think more people should read these fics!), but I must make an exception for my wonderful, wonderful present (which is deservedly popular):

Money often costs too much (Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold)

I asked for Illyan being awesome, because Illyan is awesome and totally my favorite character. I asked for Vorkosigan loyalty and caring enough to make Vor real -- And, yeah. Yeah! I can't even talk about this coherently. It's like my yuletide writer went into sections of my brain I didn't even know were there to craft a fic just for me. And it's about expense reports, which coming off of just having to do some of these (which the writer could not possibly have known unless there is yuletide telepathy happening) totally makes me squee with joy. And so nicely written. Thank you, O writer, for making my first yuletide such a happy one! *flails some more*

Other (gen unless otherwise stated) recs in Earthsea (mild M/M), English and Scottish Popular Ballads (mild multi-pairing), Jirel of Joiry, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (F/F), Left Hand of Darkness (mild multi-pairing), Scarlet Pimpernel - Orczy, Macbeth, Slings and Arrows, Tillerman, and Vorkosigan:

Hoag (Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin)

Jasper is made a three-dimensional character here, someone with both good and bad characteristics. The entire fic, and the penultimate paragraph in particular, is heartbreaking. And yay otak!

Far Too Many Questions, With Some Quite Dubious Answers (English and Scottish Popular Ballads)

Riddles and folklore and strange stories: haunting and weird and beautifully written. It reminds me a bit of Catherynne Valente's books in the lush language and the way it puts together stories that may (or may not) be loosely related, and the way the author uses riddles and folklore (the way Valente uses fairy-tale tropes).

The Lord of Joiry (Jirel of Joiry)

You don't need to know canon to read this, but if you do it will be that much better. This is a pitch-perfect (back)story of Jirel -- it's got the beautifully horrible world that Jirel often gets flung into; the tone of the story is just right; Jirel herself is exactly the brash, impetuous, courageous, non-analytic character she is in the stories. I would have sworn it was canon if I didn't know it was yuletide, and in my head it's going to be.

A Practical Method of Italian Singing (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo)

Eugenie and Louise are just about my favorite characters from Count of Monte Cristo, and this fic, I feel, really gives them a nice ending, which Dumas did not. Louise comes across as a much stronger character than in Dumas, shrugging off the humiliation Dumas tried to inflict on them, and Eugenie's plot is hilarious.

The End and the Way (Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin)

You don't need to know canon to read this, but this might inspire you to pick up the original. This is an incredibly beautifully and intelligently written story about an original character in Le Guin's (mostly-)genderless world of Gethen, with all the thoughtfulness about gender and sex and life that is present in the original (possibly more, with the forty years that have passed since then). It is a wonderfully lovely, understated coming-of-age story that has that ring of truth to it that the best fiction has. This is possibly my favorite Yuletide story (discounting my marvelous gift, of course!), in that not only did the author write a fic I couldn't have imagined, but I would also never have thought to write the prompt.

Ten Years After (Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy)

A lovely, quiet glimpse at Blakeney and Chauvelin many years afterwards. Their emnity, dimmed with time and subsequent historical events, has become something that is almost friendship. This is totally my new headcanon.

The Captain of the Caledonia (Macbeth - Shakespeare)

Okay, so, others have recced this, but really! Let me just repeat: Macbeth. In SPAAACE. What more could you want?

Don't Ask About Geoffrey Tennant (Slings and Arrows)

Anna is the heart and soul of this show, and she shines in this fic. All the characters are so in-character that I giggled my way through the entire thing. Mentions of Oliver's sheep and Richard trying to hire William Shatner for the win!

Neither Have I Wings To Fly (Tillerman Cycle - Cynthia Voigt)

I looooove the Tillerman cycle like whoa, and Voigt in general, because of its thoughtful multifaceting of characters who in any other book would be dismissed as one-dimensional stereotypes. This fic fleshes out Millie, who isn't nearly as smart as Ab but who is observant, and it is about a lifelong friendship between two women. I also requested Tillerman fic, so it was almost like another gift for me.

Burn the Topless Towers (Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold)

My heart just about stopped, reading this. Dark, dark look at Aral's first wife; the fic makes her three-dimensional, sympathetic, and what's more, Vor, and adds backstory plot while it's at it. This is a perfect little black gem. One of my favorites in this Yuletide season.

Dear lovely Yuletide writer,

First, thank you! This is my first year of Yuletide, and I am excited! I wrote a bunch of stuff below to give you a feel for how I think about things in case you want to know, and prompts in case you're the sort of author who wants them, but feel free to ignore all of it if your fic-writing takes you in another direction, because I know how that is -- I am excited that you are writing for my fandom (whatever it might be) and I will be excited to get a fic from you!

Tillerman Saga (Voigt), Dragon Waiting (Ford), Vorkosigan Saga (Bujold) )

Thank you again!

So, I started writing fic. Hence this journal.

Here are my fics so far (links to AO3). I am not just interested in Legally Blonde, I swear, though it was the catalyst. I actually don't anticipate writing any more Legally Blonde fic unless I'm responding to a prompt/request. Well, there may be one or two more someday. We will see.

Legally Blonde (musical): Five ways Emmett (might have) told Elle he loved her. Might-have-beens.

Tam Lin (Pamela Dean) and Legally Blonde (musical) crossover: Into the Life of Things. Janet and Thomas go to grad school and law school, respectively, and over the course of several years get to know two other law students quite well. One is an immediate friend, and the other takes more work.

Legally Blonde (musical): Four times Elle taught Emmett something (and one time Warner did). What the title says.

Besides my apparent obsession with LB, I like Broadway musicals in general (there might be a Wicked fic on the back burner), as well as lots of books including but not limited to science fiction/fantasy (coming up is a Yuletide letter that will say more about that).

You can also find me here for random ranting, mostly on books but also on TV, music, and what-have-you.
